A Portuguese-American Love Story
In the 1950’s a beautiful, intelligent female pharmacist from Lisbon, Portugal became pen pals with a handsome, sweet man in Tampa, Florida. They wrote each other back and forth for a few months, and eventually started to form a strong friendship. So strong that the man invited the woman to take a holiday to visit him in Tampa so they could meet in person.
The day finally came when the two met, and sparks flew! After a few weeks of hanging out, he asked her to marry him, and she never looked back.
They got married, and a few years later they had a baby girl named Maria. That baby was my mom!
I’ve never had a chance to visit Portugal, but I live vicariously through stories like this one that my mom has told me over the years (this one is my favorite). I’ve always been very proud of my Portuguese heritage (as well as my German and African American heritage), and even took Portuguese in college to learn the language. So when I saw this shirt, I knew I had to have it!
Verão Em Porto is Portuguese and translates to “Summer in Porto” (it should really say Verão no Porto, but oh well). Porto is a coastal city in Northwest Portugal, only about an hour and a half south of the Minho wine region where Vinho Verde wines are produced.
Vinho Verde (“green wine”) is a dry, white, low alcohol, fizzy, young wine that is super refreshing and perfect for day drinking.
This fizzy-limeade-like wine can be made from a blend of 25 different white grapes indigenous to Portugal like Alvarinho, Loureiro, and Trajadura!
If you need an under-$10 poolside beverage
Here I’m drinking the Broadbent Vinho Verde, which was refreshingly crisp with notes of green apple, lime zest and flowers on the nose, and a dry and spritzy finish on the palette. Super easy to drink, 9%ABV (again, perfect for day drinking) and only $8.99!
You can buy it here– thank me later.

Portugal Inspired Summer Style
This shirt on its own is pretty plain, so I knew I needed to add in some color when I styled it. My turban is perfect for summer, and it’s under $6! The yellow tassel earrings added a much needed pop of color that tied in perfectly with the turban headband. My chambray shoes
Like I said, I’ve never been to Portugal (it’s on my bucket list!), but my good friend Jordan from Dancing for Donuts has an awesome travel guide she published from her trip last year! She even has a whole section dedicated to Porto (such a beautiful city that I tried to channel in this post)! Check it out if you’re planning to visit anytime soon.
